Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. Her aunt worked the night shift as nurse to ensure she could pursue her love for theater and art in the daytime. DuVernay quickly was captivated after showing her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's example the power of art as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was socially conscious and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay visited Selma during the summer months and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage in the house of one of the jury. Her tasks left her disappointed by journalism and she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an intern at an unassuming studio. From this position she started her own PR company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye. Autumn Riley.............................Autumn Riley was born in Los Angeles United States. Autumn Riley has the birth name of. The actress is well-known for her roles in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn appeared as Rose in A More Perfect Union as also Anna Payne from American Experience.
